Heat-pump marketing in Manitoba

Manitoba pairs one of southern Canada's longest heating seasons with clear, active heat-pump rebates. For a specialist contractor, that combination is a strong marketing opportunity, as long as the program details stay current.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Manitoba is one of the clearest heat-pump opportunities in the country. The heating season is long, a third of households already heat with electricity, and Efficiency Manitoba runs an active, plainly structured air source heat-pump rebate. It was also the first province to sign a federal CGHAP agreement. Contractors who show they know these programs well, and who back that with real cold-climate installs, are well placed.

The Manitoba heat-pump market

Answer first: a mix of gas and electric homes, both with a strong case for cold-climate heat pumps.

Statistics Canada data for 2023 shows 52% of Manitoba households on natural gas for primary heating and 33% on electricity. That gives two buyer groups:

  • Electrically heated homes with electric furnaces, baseboards or electric boilers, where a heat pump can cut consumption sharply and some households may qualify for no-cost programs.
  • Gas-heated homes, where a ducted cold-climate heat pump can be paired with the existing furnace or replace an old AC.

Winnipeg is by far the largest market. Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson are smaller markets where reputation and local presence carry more weight than ad budgets.

Climate and seasonality

Answer first: Manitoba's long, very cold winters make cold-climate credibility essential and give heat pumps a long working season.

The heating season is among the longest in southern Canada. Buyers will want to know how your recommended systems perform on the coldest nights and what provides backup. For marketing:

  • Late summer and fall: the main window for planned heat-pump projects, before the cold sets in.
  • Spring: cooling-led enquiries in Winnipeg and the south.
  • Winter: emergency heating work; keep heat-pump messaging focused on assessments and planning.

Programs as of October 2026

Answer first: Manitoba has a straightforward rebate, a no-cost stream for some electrically heated homes, and federal CGHAP funding.

  • Efficiency Manitoba Air Source Heat Pump Rebate. For an existing primary residence, the rebate is $2,000 with a ducted cold-climate air source system and $1,500 with a ductless one. Registered suppliers get a $100 bonus on applications with an F280 heat-load calculation submitted before 2027-03-31.
  • Affordable Home Energy Program. Qualifying homes that currently rely on an electric furnace, electric boiler or baseboards can receive an air source or ground source heat pump at no cost, put in by a registered program contractor. The program page is live, but we did not re-confirm eligibility details, so check before promoting it.
  • Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, Manitoba delivery. The first CGHAP agreement, announced 2025-09-12, brought nearly $30 million in federal funding for no-cost direct-install retrofits for low- to median-income households, delivered through Efficiency Manitoba, according to the federal announcement.
  • Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (federal). Closed in Manitoba on 2026-07-31.

The federal rebate announced for 2027 will add to this picture; see the federal readiness guide.

How we'd market heat pumps in Manitoba

Answer first: make the rebate easy to understand, prove cold-climate performance, and show your registered status where it applies.

  1. Publish a simple rebate page. Two amounts, one condition (existing primary residence, cold-climate unit), a link and a date. Manitoba's rebate is clear enough that a clean page converts well.
  2. Separate the electric-heat audience. Homes on baseboards or electric furnaces may qualify for programs that gas-heated homes don't. A dedicated page, written carefully and linked to Efficiency Manitoba, serves them without overpromising.
  3. Show registration status. If you're a registered supplier or program contractor, say so precisely. It's a real credential homeowners can check, and it fits our specialist positioning work.
  4. Build F280 into your process. The supplier bonus rewards proper heat-load calculations. Mentioning that you size every system properly is also a strong trust message.
  5. Track installs by program. Knowing which program each install used shows where to spend, as covered in rebate-driven campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Manitoba heat-pump rebate?

As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba pays $2,000 when an existing primary residence gets a ducted cold-climate air source system, or $1,500 when it is ductless. Check efficiencymb.ca before quoting any amount.

What is the F280 bonus?

Efficiency Manitoba says registered suppliers receive a $100 bonus for applications that include an F280 heat-load calculation, submitted before 2027-03-31. It is a supplier incentive, so it belongs in your operations planning more than in your consumer ads.

Who regulates heating work in Manitoba?

The Office of the Fire Commissioner handles gas and oil burner permits and tradesperson licensing, among other areas. Check the OFC directly; we link and summarise, we don't advise on compliance.
